Biography
Maggie Ellis (b. 1991, Atlanta, Georgia; lives and works in New York, NY. MFA Hunter College 2017, BFA Savannah College of Art and Design 2014.) Ellis works from memory, sketching strangers she observes daily in New York. The figures are realized as they exist in her head-misremembered and partly formed, ripe for reinvention. Beginning each painting without a predetermined sense of place, she intuits her environments with abstract gestures, populated with these figures in action. Ring-lit backdrops illuminate people of all shapes, sizes, and patterns, while exaggerated perspectives and elongated features heighten the drama of fast-paced recreational scenes. Ellis' paintings center on the collective; within these communal spaces, strange things occur while rules of reality are bent. Charles Moffett will present Ellis' third solo exhibition with the gallery in October 2023.
